Meet the Team

Bill Swan (yep, just little ol' me)

I’m a repatriated Nova Scotian, born in Halifax over 50 years ago, where I spent my first decade of life wearing out the doors at the IWK Children’s Hospital ER due to severe asthma.

I hold a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Saint Mary’s University and a Master in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa. I have NO plans on going back to school for a PhD (though if someone awarded an honourary one, I would insist on people calling me Dr. Billy Bob as my middle name IS Robert!).

I am the president and co-founder of RealObjectives Inc.,, the Patient Alliance in Nova Scotia (PAiNS) and currently Faces of Pharmacare.

I worked in health association management from 1994 to 2017 starting with the Canadian Health Economics Research Association. In 1997 I joined the International Health Economics Association rising to Deputy CEO and Director of Operations. I helped found the American Society of Health Economists, and the African Health Economics and Policy Association (AfHEA) and sat on its board.

Currently a member of the Medical and Patient Advisory Board for Aqualitas Medical Cannabis in Nova Scotia, and the Treasurer for the Nova Scotia Health Coalition. I sat on the board of the Capital District Health Authority, the Board of the Asthma Society of Canada, chaired the National Asthma Patient Alliance (Canada), is a Merit Reviewer with the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute in Washington, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Body on Respiratory and Allergy Therapies for Health Canada.

I have published on the Canadian health care system, and - as a well-controlled lifelong severe asthmatic - is serious about bona-fide patient-led patient engagement.

Long before the health research and association management stage of my career I was an unwitting assistant tiger handler at CBC television.
